Tschichold is considered one of the most influential people in 20th century typography. Coming from an artistic background, he worked with typography from an early age. He was raised in Germany and worked closely with Paul Renner, the creator of Futura. Similar to Renner, his modern approach to type was deemed a threat to the traditional gothic typefaces of Germany, such as Blackletter and both he and Renner were exiled from Germany. Tschichold condemned all serif typefaces and spent a long period of time working for Penguin books, overseeing the development of over 500 books.
